Resolved Question: Is my air conditioner operating normal?

by admin on Nov.10, 2009, under Air Conditioner

Alright, My electric bill has doubled during the summer months here in south Florida, Granted the outside temps were in the 90s for the past 3 months and my thermostat was set to 78 and then later to 80.

my bill pretty much doubled. and I wanted to find the culprit. This is a 2 story house. with 2 central AC units. the upstairs one constantly turns on… almost all day long… and only turns off for a few minutes at a time and immediately turns on again.

the downstairs one works normal… I assumed this was normal because cold air sinks and hot air rises… but does it seem right to be making a bill double itself?… iI believe it is a 2tonne or 2.5 tonne Unit

I even bought a cheap thermometer from walmart to test the temps in the house. I placed the probe next to the thermostat and the thermometer read the temps were 79* , the AC is still turning on despite the thermostat set at 81* 2 degrees hotter than the room temp

What gives?… I have a clean filter too… but why is thermostat turning on the AC when my separate thermometer reads a cooler temp
Ok… I guess I will disclose some more information

this house is only 4 years old… with the AC being 4 years old as well… has a newer digital Thermostat too.

The AC in question had its compressor ground out 2 months ago and had Service America come out and replace it… so its a new unit too….

they added something new to the lines as well… I think it was a dryer when I asked him what it was….

anyways… do you guys still think the thermostat is out of calibration?… its a lennox unit with a honeywell t8000 series digital thermostat

What all could be wrong as far as the condenser unit goes?.. just the freon?
